We get this question a lot. The best way to explain it is to show you how many
British Thermal Units (BTU's) there are in ten cents of energy in each types of fuels.
Ten cents of electricity amounts to one
kilowatt, and one KW of resistive heat
is considered to be 100% efficient. This
is considered to be a EER rating of 3.4
Normal Electrical heaters will use electrical resistance to make heat with a metal, ceramic or quartz element. in this scenario, your ten cents will produce 3,400 BTU's of heat.
Ten cents of FUEL OIL at $3.79 per
gallon will produce 2,150 BTU's of
usable heat.
Ten cents of LP gas at $2.75 per gallon
will produce 2,200 BTU's of useable heat.
The Heat Pump Advantage...
Ten cents of electricity or one kilowatt when used with a Ductless super high efficiency Heat Pump that is rated at 27.2 SEER with a EER rating of 15 will produce 15,000 BTU's of usable heat for ten cents without any electric back-up auxiliary heat.
Ductless Heat Pumps do not make heat, they simply use the 410-A refrigerant to absorb heat from the outdoors and transfer it to the indoors.
